Strengths

• Students will be taught to create a production plan for a scene of a selected HK film;

Hong Kong Film Award-Nominated Visual Artist · Innovator in Cinematic Spatial Storytelling

Twice nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Art Direction (Papa, The Sparring Partner), Ida Mak reconstructs cinematic narrative tension through meticulously crafted spatial details, leveraging her acute aesthetic vision and cross-disciplinary design expertise. A graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (BA in The School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, major in Stage and Costume Design, 2012), she established a multifaceted narrative foundation through early career work in theatre and exhibition design before transitioning to film.

 Her filmography spans significant commercial productions including:

• Son of the Neon light (Selected for the 78th Cannes Film Festival "Midnight Screening")
• Raging Fire 2 (Hong Kong Film Award Best Picture nominee)
• Shock Wave 2 (Hong Kong Film Award winner for Best Visual Effects)
• Mad Fate (Official Selection, Berlinale Encounters)

 Transcending genre films and arthouse cinema, Mak specializes in deepening character psychology through environmental semiotics, creating socially metaphorical immersive spaces. Recently, she actively collaborates with emerging directors to push visual boundaries, including:

• Suspense thriller Unforgivable Sin (dir. Wong Pak Kei)
• Valley of the Shadow of Death (dir. Lam Sin & Tam Sin Yeung) —— A rare Hong Kong film exploring Christian themes of guilt and atonement

Her pioneering work continuously expands the aesthetic frontiers of Hong Kong cinema.

Mature Applicants
Mature applicants, i.e. those aged 21 or above with at least two years’ relevant working experience, can be admitted. Where appropriate, the applicant may be required to pass an entrance assessment, which can be in an oral and/or written form.
