Lecturer: Chan Hei Shing

Chan Hei Shing is a promising book designer. He graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a first honours Bachelor Degree in Visual Communication Design in 2006. He furthered his studies in London and graduated from MA Book Arts at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, with Distinction in 2008.
Hei Shing has gained international recognition by receiving international and local design awards including the YIC Young Design Talent Award (HKDC), Guardian Student Media Award, Young Writers’ Debut Competition, HKDA Global Design Awards and Swatch Young Illustrators Award, as well as exhibited his works on international platforms.
In 2016, Hei Shing set up his design studio “Hei Shing Book Design” in Hong Kong, specialize in book and publication design. Since 2015, he has been a visiting lecturer teaching BA (Hons) in Communication Design at School of Design, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Since 2020, he has been a visiting lecturer teaching at Hong Kong Design Institute.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

(1) apply the typographic and publication design principles that make complex multi-page publications usable;
(2) devise an effective organisation structure for complex text matter using pagination, grids and styles; and
(3) apply aesthetic and digital craft skills related to typography and page layout using an industry-standard page layout application to fulfil communication goals, users’ needs and other contextual requirements.

(1) Students are required to bring their own laptop (installed with Adobe InDesign) to the classes.

Entry Requirement

Basic Qualification:
- Five HKDSE subjects at Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; or 
- Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; or
- Completion of a QF Level 3 programme that is deemed acceptable to the respective Programme Board; or
- Relevant RPL qualification(s) at QF Level 3 or above AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written; or
- Other relevant verifiable prior learning and/or work experience that is/are deemed appropriate by respective Programme Board AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written.

(b) Applicants are required to have at least 1 year relevant working experience.
(c) Basic knowledge of graphic design (particularly page layout) is highly preferred.
(d) An interview may also be required on need basis. 

Mature Applicants:
Mature applicants, i.e. those aged 21 or above with at least two years’ relevant working experience, may be admitted.  Where appropriate, the applicant may be required to pass an entrance assessment, which can be in an oral and/or written form.
