Design Thinking is a broad term given to a set of methods for user-centred innovation strategies that designers adopt during the process of designing. While this process of creative problem solving has been widely used within the realm of design, it also has high relevance in other disciplines and its gradually being adopted outside of the design profession. Design Thinking serves to stimulate open questions and the continuous search for different creative avenues beyond boundaries of disciplines and contexts, with a view to promoting positive change in society.

As a leading Design education institution, HKDI endeavours to advance the application of Design Thinking as a transferable skill for solving problems of all kinds, hence rolling out an initiative entitled “HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018” which includes a series of activities that engage the general public, in collaboration with various organisations that share the same vision.

The debut of “HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018” will be the Showcase and Sharing of “SmART City by Children” held on 26 August 2018, 2:45-5:30pm at VTC Auditorium of HKDI, joining hands with CreativeKids, an acclaimed creative art studio in Hong Kong that advocates the promotion of a Design Thinking mindset to the young generation.  In this event, participants will get to know our children’s version of SmART City that goes beyond technology with a focus on human needs. This art and design project empowers children and teenagers to be future change-makers, and build a more sustainable and an inclusive city. The visual expression will be both functional and aesthetic with empathetic considerations, demonstrating the potential design talents of our children.

In September and October, HKDI will launch a series of master lectures and workshops that engage students, teachers and interested professional and public, not only from Design but also other disciplines to harness the power of Design Thinking in resolving “wicked problems” in different facets of our lives, hence promoting its relevance and adoption in all walks of life.  Topics include Design Thinking for Healthcare, Design Thinking and Computational Thinking, Design Thinking for Food Innovation, Design Thinking for Organisational Change and Design Thinking for Smart City.
