Illustration and Graphics is a practice-based programme with creative, critical, reflective and technical skills developed in the studio and enhanced by pertinent academic writing. Teaching is informed by staff research, practice and expertise. Students are actively encouraged to be imaginative, ambitious and resourceful to face the challenges of an unpredictable, demanding, globally-competitive and technologically-driven world.

Sound pedagogic practice mixed with imaginative delivery and assessment methods will enable students to produce personal and expressive portfolios that demonstrate creative agility and technical prowess. Students will be helped to develop the necessary creativity, critical reflection, questioning, understanding, theoretical underpinning and practical skills to pursue successful professional careers in both home and international contexts. The unique quality of the programme is its interdisciplinary nature, enabling students to explore a wide range of professionally based creative practices within visual communication, and navigate their studies guided by staff towards a focused and professionally credible destination.

The programme is distinguished by its variety and range of materials, processes and formats, including print, digital, 3D and moving image. Students are supported by access to industry-standard software, workshops and studio environments. Typical graduate portfolios might include illustration for a range of purposes, graphic design, art direction, motion graphics, animation, printed textile design, production design, 3D model making and concept design. Students on the course work on a mix of project briefs set by staff and external clients as well as working on self-initiated tasks, Hong Kong, Asian, and international competition opportunities, live project briefs and collaborations with other HKDI and Coventry University. The programme is highly established within this discipline provision in the sector and students from the programme have won and been acknowledged in a range of national and international competitions and external opportunities. Students studying on the programmego on to work in a range of highly regarded professional roles within industry and the freelance creative sector.

Recruits generally have an aptitude for drawing, media and material experimentation or digital manipulation; however, those with different backgrounds and arresting portfolios backed up by a convincing rationale will certainly be considered. Staff research, practice and expertise feed into the programme's qualities and characteristics.
