Complexly crafted is “Musubi”, traditional techniques such as bundling, weaving, tangling are layered into modern clothing and then adorned with traditional patterns from Japanese culture. With ropes tying different garments into one outfit, its silhouette smoothly combines both ancient and modern forms with a twist to remind viewers that there is always beauty in details if they learn to look close enough.

“Fashion delivers stories which do not only recount history, but demonstrate how history has emerged”

“BLOSSOM” inspiration from the word ‘Blossom’. It show details on the structure, form and colors of blossoming flowers. Ruffle is the main design element in the collection, together with gradient colors, the ruffles are delicately inserted into the seam lines of wool fabric, creating a three dimensional textural effect representing full bloom of flowers. The collection also showed sensitive attention to wool fabric and embellishment details such as hand embroidery, felting and transfer printing. In order to remind people to appreciate the beauty, value and energy of handicraft craftsmanship and bring back the prosperity of handicraft culture.

“Fashion is an attitude, not a gender”

The brand MODEMENT, pioneering gender-neutral, fluid, zero-waste fashion made in Hong Kong from natural, sustainable materials. In 2012 Aries designed costumes for the City Contemporary Dance Company, and in 2015 she created two installations for the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall. Her first collection was shown at Hong Kong Fashion Week in 2013, and MODEMENT was showcased at Milan Fashion Week in 2017 and Paris Fashion Week in 2018.

Aries understands the importance of being international, but wants to keep her own identity while creating clothes in a more eco-friendly way.

"FLATPACKABLE" is a collection that observes the social phenomenon – people are paying more but for lesser space – and wishes to address the issue through its design. It aims to bring out the message that freeing up space for what is essential in life, both physically and mentally, is key to finding inner peace and happiness in the sometimes-chaotic outer world!

The collection plays with the idea of “expandable and collapsible space” and applies flatpack- and origami-inspired concepts to its design. The folded detail is the key feature; each and every piece can expand and collapse into its “flattest” form. Organza ironed on medium-stiffness interfacing fabric is the main material used in the collection, as it resembles the quality of paper, which is foldable, thin and lightweight.

Inspired from “Plastic Surgery”, it is a fashion collection with the theme “Variable”. Similar to the idea of jigsaw puzzle, the fashion pieces are made up of individual pieces of fabrics which people can create their own unique clothes by assembling those interlocking and tessellating pieces with jean buttons. With the help of technology, the pattern is made by 3D printing, not only making it much more outstanding, but also enhancing the clothing ventilation.

The natural pattern of fish net can only be seen after ripping away the gel coating, symbolic to the uncovering of history. The print making process and the fish net pattern also demonstrate craftsmanship.

"De Wille zur Macht" is inspired by the German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, who has a concept of Übermensch, meaning superior man - a goal for humanity to set for itself. Leong believed that fashion can be the power to overcome different daily challenges, in the format of hi-tech and functional clothing. This collection adopted thermoplastic materials, heat-sensitive fabrics and model-making techniques to build the structures of the pieces with masculine style, demonstrating the power of human and fashion. It also reminds people to stay strong even in difficult conditions.

HKDI Fashion Image Design students won awards in the "Next in Cheongsam 2021 – Young Designer Challenge”, with cheongsam designs under the theme “Next in Cheongsam – Denim”.

PANG Wing Kiu, with the design work “Dragon Contour”, has won the first prize in the competition. She incorporated Chinese dragon with the fluidity of Western ruffle skirt. The Chinese corset adds a touch of whim and sexiness, while denim brings about a young and casual vibe to the whole design concept.
