27 Jan 2015

HKDI students received the Best of Category Award-under Product Design category and two Certificates of Excellence at the A&D Trophy Awards 2014 (formerly known as The Perspective Awards). HKDI always encourages students to join various international competitions, in order to obtain more experience and prepare themselves for future design careers.

HKDI student in Product Design, Kwok Yuen Kiu, received the Best of Category Award under the category of- Product Design (Student). The product is specifically designed for blood donors. Since many first-time blood donors become nervous and feel dizzy during the blood donation process, Yuen Kiu wishes to design a product to help blood donors to regulate their own breathing rhythm. Yuen Yiu’s winning design, Breathe, is a hand-pad to be placed on the armrest of blood donation chairs. The up-and-down movements of Breathe will serve as a reminder to the blood donors to breathe regularly and relax. Yuen Kiu is very delighted as it is her first attempt to join the competition. She finds it very rewarding to receive recognitions from the panel judges for her design concepts. She has obtained a better understanding of the design industry after the competition and gained a lot of confidence to pursue her career goal as a professional product designer.

In addition, two HKDI graduates received Certificates of Excellence in the Interior Design and Architecture categories. HKDI graduate of Interior Design, Nip Yau Chi, received the Certificate of Excellence – Interior Design (Student). Yau Chi’s winning design, The Comma Centre, aims to offer a space with bookstores, tea-houses, artistic corners and coffee shops for urban dwellers, so that they can take a rest and re-gain their energy. The design concept is a “comma” because it means a short pause in a sentence. The comma is a symbol which is made up by a dot and a tail and its can be used into spatial design and as one of a design elements to define the building.

HKDI graduate of Architectural Design, Tai Yeung, received the Certificate of Excellence – Architecture (Student). The winning design Climb the Park aims to transform the Climbing Centre at the Caine Road Garden into a pedestrian walkway that penetrates the Garden. The new design provides a new park experience to the visitors as well as connecting the park with its surrounding area.
