Master Lecture “Behind Buildings” by Rafael Moneo

Date: 16 Dec 2016 (Friday)
Cocktails: 6:00pm
Lecture: 6:30pm
Venue: Hong Kong Design Institute
Speaker: Rafael Moneo

“It is true that buildings, once completed, begin a new life, by themselves, suddenly remote from their architects. But behind buildings there is inevitably a collection of narratives that explain their genesis, their coming to be. Stories that tell of the clients, institutions, and the reasons why a building is raised up. Others that recount the architect, his personal relationship with the building as well as the intellectual ambitions, the theoretical goals, that the architect sought to explore in these buildings.

I have chosen three well known buildings from my career to consider under the aesthetical and ideological commitments I was involved with in the days these buildings were raised. This will allow me to make some reflections about the evolution of architectural theory during the years I developed my career.” – Rafael Moneo
