Communication Design & Digital Media

The Department of Communication Design and Digital Media is a creative, dynamic and technologically advanced environment for learning. We embrace all aspects of creative production in communication design and digital media. Students develop communication and technical skills through a hands-on learning experience, with access to relevant state-of-the-art technology that enables them to become commercially viable and innovative designers. Areas of study in Communication Design include advertising, branding, graphic design, illustration, information design, publication design, typography, user experience design and designing and production for print media. In Digital Media, areas of study include animation, film and television production, interactive media, music and audio technology, photography, Web and app development, visual effects and storytelling in a transmedia context.

The Higher Diploma in Advertising Design aims to be a top-of-mind programme that focuses on the balance between creative strategy, communication art and production skills. Students experience learning through activities that nurture the creative mind, with competitive transferrable skills that develop commercial awareness and consumer insights applicable to traditional and digital advertising and marketing.

Students apply creative strategies to persuasive communication designs that are practically produced for pitching and presentation. Students are trained to become enterprising advertising creatives who are open-minded, playful, confident, compelling and competitive. We encourage students to be observant, courageous and responsive in the ever-changing and highly challenging world of advertising.

The Higher Diploma in Creative Media prepares students to become professional multimedia practitioners. The digital and multimedia entertainment industries have been blooming in the past 2 decades and the economy has bounced rapidly in recent years, providing great opportunities for students to find employment in a variety of creative media careers.

The programme aims to nurture students in developing their aesthetic sensibility and hands-on production skills. It also equips students with the ability to adapt to new skills and technologies in the future. After a common first semester, students may focus on one of three study streams: Animation and Visual Effects, Interactive Media or Web and App Design, subject to academic performance and availability of places.

03 Digital Musicand Media

The Higher Diploma in Digital Music and Media is a unique programme in Hong Kong that integrates education and training in both music production and audio technology for media production. The programme aims to develop a new breed of music, sound and audio talents; designers; and production specialists who can work across different media and entertainment industry sectors.

A student-centred pedagogy enables students to develop their knowledge through participation in a variety of practices and learning activities, providing students with a creative, experimental and technically oriented learning experience to build up their professionalism. Areas of study include:

04 Film andTelevision

The Higher Diploma in Film and Television aims to equip students with the necessary technical skills and professional knowledge to pursue successful careers in the media industry. Blending theoretical knowledge and practical application, students learn how to manage the photography, video and filmmaking processes and develop their talents in storytelling, video and photo shooting, visual effects design, video editing and photo retouching.   

After a common first semester, students may choose to follow a general stream in Film and Television or a stream that concentrates on Photography, subject to the student’s academic performance and availability of places in the specific streams.

The Higher Diploma in Publication Design and Print Media is a unique programme that prepares students professionally for the vibrant printing and publishing industries in Hong Kong. The programme is technologically minded, but also develops students’ knowledge in aspects of management for the printing and publishing industries. The underpinning of a design-driven approach builds students’ confidence and talents in publication design and print media through live projects, industry attachment and visits to printing and publishing facilities. Our students have garnered prestigious industry awards (three champions and one merit award at the Hong Kong Print Awards 2017), and their work is frequently exhibited in museums and art galleries throughout Hong Kong.

After a common first semester, students may choose to focus on either the Print Media or Publication Design streams, subject to academic performance and availability of places.

The Higher Diploma in Transmedia nurtures creative talents to become proficient storytellers who can move fluidly across a multitude of media. They not only are knowledgeable about the trends of social network platforms, but also possess a strong marketing sense.

Investments in creative industries are rapidly migrating onto digital platforms. In response to this changing media ecology, the programme’s training focuses on the following areas:

  1. Storytelling strategies that cater to the consumption behaviours of on-line audiences;
  2. Application of interactive game technologies (such as augmented reality and virtual reality) for entertainment content development;
  3. Development of digital marketing plans to engage a target audience; and
  4. Multiple skills, with diverse workshop training options including:

The Higher Diploma in Visual Communication nurtures creative talents in four professional areas: visual communication, brand design, information design and illustration. We provide diversified professional training that enables students to communicate effectively through visual representations in various forms and media, both on- and off-line.

Students will learn how to think creatively and strategically, and build analytical and visualisation skills to persuasively engage audiences and markets. The programme develops students’ ability to be independent problem solvers who are observant, curious and passionate and who dare to explore new frontiers of visual communication.

The programme also provides broad educational experiences with project management, interpersonal communication and team-building skills that match industry demands for flexible graduates who can compete in a dynamic, fast-paced and ever-changing creative environment.

After a common first semester, students may choose to follow one of the four streams, subject to academic performance and availability of places.
