HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2019

12.09.2019
HKDI
Campus Events

Design Thinking is a broad term given to a set of methods for user-centred innovation strategies that designers adopt during the process of designing.

While this process of creative problem solving has been widely used within the realm of design, it also has high relevance in other disciplines and its gradually being adopted outside of the design profession. Design Thinking serves to stimulate open questions and the continuous search for different creative avenues beyond boundaries of disciplines and contexts, with a view to promoting positive change in society.

Further to the success of "HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018" held last year, HKDI will launch another series of design thinking master lectures and workshops that engage students, teachers, interested professionals and the general public in September and October 2019. In this year's "HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2019", HKDI will again endeavour and advance the application of Design Thinking as a transferable skill for solving problems of all kinds.

Master Lecture:
Beyond empathy, designerly way of thinking
12 Septemper 2019, Thursday ︳5:30pm

Super-aged society means there is a greater need for public and statutory authorities to work with older people in planning future services in order to ensure communities are fit for all ages. As a design methodology scholar and educator, Dr Lee advocate designerly way of thinking and doing to immerse ourselves in the living reality of others, i.e. not just design with the others but design as the others. It is beyond empathy and focusing design as a creative practice/discipline and more important as citizen’s right and making every aspect of daily life a holistic celebration of autonomy.

Speaker:
• Dr Yanki Lee, Co-founder of Enable Foundation

Master Lecture:
Medisign: Human-centred design for complex sociotechnical care systems
19 September 2019, Thursday ︳5:30pm

To guarantee quality and affordability of healthcare in the long term new forms of patient care are needed, such as active participation of patients in their care path and networked multidisciplinary care. Designing and implementing these new forms of care require a holistic systemic approach towards healthcare. Designers, with their creativity and systemic, human-centered design thinking skills, can play an essential role here.

This lecture addresses the tools and methods of Medisign and the educational principles applied. It also addresses how to collaborate with (big) companies as a university on these topics and present a structured way to do so, connecting different courses with different questions from companies.

Workshop:
Patient Journey Mapping
20 September 2019, Friday ︳2pm - 6pm

In this workshop participants will learn creating patient journeys and using them in design processes. A patient journey is a graphic representation of all stages a patient goes through during their illness and treatment. The different actors the patient meets during this journey are part of the patient journey and their interactions are described in so-called touchpoints. Redesigning these touchpoints plays a key role in improving healthcare services. Patient journeys take a sociotechnical systems perspective on care (instead of focusing on singular touchpoints), which is essential to understand overall patient experience as well as the impact of new products and services on care systems.

Speakers:
• Prof Dr Ir Richard Goossens, Full Professor of Physical Ergomonics, Delft University of Technology
• Dr Ir Marijke Melles, Associate Professor of Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology

Master Lecture:
Architecture through the Aesthetics of Disorder
25 September 2019, Wednesday ︳5:30pm

There is beauty in disorder, contaminations, putrefactions. How can something be advanced if it is not confronted, through striving to achieve that balance and trying to break that perfect ideal of imagination, innovation, and originality? In this lecture, Mr Alonso will reveal his extensive journey into the new logics of pollution and construction of structural cultural instability; to radicalize the agenda of the aesthetics of form and architecture, using the possibilities of artificial and natural interaction. This is in tune with the belief that the sole purpose of architecture is to imagine and challenge the culture of the discipline from and through all possible angles.

Speaker:
• Hernan Diaz Alonso, Director, Southern California Institute of Architecture / SCI-Arc

Workshop:
Interactive Diorama
1st Session: 24 September 2019, Tuesday ︳9:30am - 12:30pm
2nd Session: 24 September 2019, Tuesday ︳2:30pm - 5:30pm
3rd Session: 25 September 2019, Wednesday ︳2pm - 6pm
*This workshop include three sessions, which are related to each other. Participants have to attend all these three sessions if they have registered this workshop of "Interactive Diorama.

The workshop will be devoted to designing and making an app in the Unity game engine. Participants will be working with 3d models, custom shaders and c# scripting in order to produce an interactive software ‘diorama’. The aim of the workshop is to explore the conceptual and aesthetic potential of simulations for architectural design, and construct new design interfaces and tools.

Participants will explore the diorama format as a possible extension of traditional architectural mediums of representation. The ultimate goal of the format is the creation of a fully fledged, self contained, interactive micro world.

Speakers:
• Damjan Jovanovic, Design Studio Faculty, Southern California Institute of Architecture / SCI-Arc
• Hsinming Fung, Director of International Programs & Institutional Relationships, Southern California Institute of Architecture / SCI-Arc

Master Lecture:
Farming 4.0: Innovation for a Green Future
3 October 2019, Thursday ︳5:30pm

Land desertification, food crisis and food safety have been prevalent global problems affecting human wellbeing. Mr Gordon Tam, designer-turned-entrepreneur, founded Farm66 to develop urban aquaponics farming as an innovative solution for Hong Kong, a densely populated city short of local food supply. Through revitalising abandoned buildings and innovating technologies, urban aquaponics farming is made possible as an environmental-friendly eco-system, free of external contamination such as heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers, extreme weathers and natural disasters.

Farm66 is a successful case in many facets – business, science, horticulture, culinary, urban redevelopment, sustainability etc.

Speaker:
• Gordon Tam, Founder & CEO of Farm 66

Master Lecture:
Design as a Social Practice: innovation as a human activity
10 October 2019, Thursday ︳5:30pm

Workshop:
Making Thought Material: creating new experiences
1st Session: 11 October 2019, Friday ︳9:30am - 12:30pm
2nd Session: 11 October 2019, Friday ︳2:30pm - 5:30pm

*This workshop include two sessions, which are related to each other. Participants have to attend all these three sessions if they have registered this workshop of "Interactive Diorama.

Speaker:
• Dr Gordon Hush, Head of the Innovation School, The Glasgow School of Art

Master Lecture:
Virtual Reality: Temporary Distraction or Real Opportunity?
11 October 2019, Friday ︳5:30pm

VR has been around for decades but recent technical advances have caused a huge surge in popularity within the last 24 months. Given the huge investment in VR by Facebook, Nokia, Microsoft and Samsung it’s imperative that we are all ‘VR aware’.

This lecture will present an unbiased review of this new technology. It will explain and clarify the benefits and problems associated with these technologies and will consider in detail the critical success factors for implementing VR projects exploring why some have been successful whilst others have failed, through a sharing of the state of the art XR projects taking place at the School of Simulation and Visualisation.

Workshop:
XR Case Studies
10 October 2019, Thursday ︳2pm - 6pm

This workshop will be based around virtual reality and augmented reality and its application to a number of real and hypothetical applications. Participants will be encouraged to discuss (in small groups) the application of the technology to a number of proposed problem areas, with a view to a good understanding of the appropriateness of these emerging technologies for varying real world problems.

Speaker:
• Prof Paul Chapman, Head of School, School of Simulation and Visualisation, The Glasgow School of Art
