Cumulus Hong Kong successfully held in HKDI from 21-24 Nov 2016

Cumulus Hong Kong held at Hong Kong Design Institute on 21 -24 November, 2016 was a success,, welcoming 300 designers, design researchers, educators, and students from 40 countries to exchange insights on Open Design in E-very-thing during the 4-day conference.

The theme ‘Open Design for E-very-thing’ probes into how designers reflected on their roles and focused on more ‘social’ aspect of their practices and potential, which led to design tackling everything, from climate change to global poverty, from redistributing resources to business strategy. It does not mean that designers are running everything, but it is wide open now for the roles design can play in society. Cumulus Hong Kong 2016 seeks to explore this openness of design, namely the opening up of design process and design for openness.

Six keynote speakers were invited to share their views of Open Design following the Welcome Remarks by Chairman of Vocational Training Council, Dr. Clement Chen. The keynote topics ranged from the Eastern aesthetics, exploration and expectations of design, to energy reform within design and designers, and how to embrace open design education and research. The audience was given opportunity to continue the Open Dialogue with the speakers and among themselves and dive into how Open Design has been changing the society with better design for everyone in need. A series of small group presentations by design academics with diversified design research topics followed in the afternoon to keep up the momentum for discussion.

To officiate the 4-day conference, Executive Director of Vocational Training Council, Mrs. Carrie Yau and President of Cumulus Association, Ms. Luisa Collina, joined the Open Photo Wall by presenting a photo that they find best to embody Open Design on 21 November, 2016. After 4 days, the wall gathered over 300 guests’ perceptions on Open Design and expressed subliminal messages on how we could open up the design process.

Besides the Open Photo Wall, design workshops including Chinese Drumming, Miao Embroidery, Dim Sum Design, Physique as Artefact Design, Light and Sound Design, and Jade Jewellery Design were held to facilitate Chinese and Western design integration and explore the unlimited innovation possible.
