Bowls in Style Workshop and Exhibition

Food culture has long been a primary focus of everyday life, especially in our country. From pottery to ceramics, and from monochromes to color glazes, bowls have experienced a long development that not only bears witnesses to the progression of human history, but also shows mankind’s unceasing vitality and creativity. Arriving in the 21st century, will young people make use of bowls to express the rich and eclectic culture of Hong Kong, and, if so, how?

From February to June, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (vA!) teamed up with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) to organise ‘Bowls in Style’, a local ceramics design cum culture workshop, in which 30 HKDI students, led by lecturer Edwin Wong, took the opportunity to rethink the forms and meanings of bowls by blending design and ceramics with aspects of local culture. At the beginning of the workshop, the students visited different districts to observe and embrace the unique ways of living, then transformed the local characteristics into innovative design elements. They were then taught different ceramic techniques from ceramic artist Jakie Leung that enabled them to render their ideas on bowls, creating an array of elegant ceramic works brimming with unique Hong Kong features.

In the space of just four months, the project enabled potential design students to work closely with experienced ceramic artist and stimulated conversations and an exchange of ideas and artistic practices. From these fascinating and intriguing ceramic works, we not only gain an acute insight into the sincerity and the unbounded imagination of students, but also realise how interdisciplinary art can both forge new looks and new lives, enrich and broaden the imagination and the possibilities of art.

June marks the launch of ‘Muse Fest HK 2016’, vA! would like to take this opportunity to showcase the works of the students of ‘Bowls in Style’, allowing you to explore the undiscovered aspects of Hong Kong through the eyes of young designers-to-be!
